In the know.

Playing it by Ear

At PineCrest, the sound of beautiful music fills the halls. The man behind the keys knows the notes well. He’s been playing since age three, even joining the Disney Kids Symphony Orchestra in Rockefeller Center as a boy. The journey from there to here hasn’t always been easy for Kristopher Moffett. In fact, it’s a journey worth sharing because of the immense obstacles the PineCrest employee has faced.

From birth to age seven, Moffett lived in 18 foster homes, including one family who was wanted by law enforcement. Somewhere along the way, he picked up a love for piano that has never left him. As luck would have it, he was eventually adopted by a family who loved music and saw his dreams come true with Disney. When he joined the Marine Corps in 2003, however, Kris had no way of knowing what lay ahead. Wounded by an IED (improvised explosive device), he spent a year in a coma and had to relearn how to walk and talk.

Today, Kris takes care of his adoptive mother and works in housekeeping at PineCrest. He can’t drive due to loss of depth perception from his war injury, but that hasn’t stopped him from putting his fingers to the keys and continuing his life’s passion for music. “Playing for the residents is such an honor,” Kris says. “I love caring for others and this adds another element to what I do here at PineCrest. I love this community and want to be here for as long as I can.” Struggles aside, Kris says he has never stopped keeping an optimistic outlook on life. Like the notes he plays, he says life is full of highs and lows, and he plans to make the most of his symphonic journey.
